Bucketing down...

I know we all seem to be talking about the weather this summer. And there really is no denying, this summer has turned out to be a particularly wet (and chilly) one. So what is a girl to do when it is bucketing down most days...?

I put on my gumboots and raincoat, and venture outdoors for just long enough to pick some flowers from my wet garden. Once the flowers are placed in the jug it is time to find some books to while away the wet afternoon.

Books seem to be "my only weakness", as I do not seem to be able to resist an alluring cover or an interesting storyline. Now murder mysteries are not usually my preferred reading, but "Death comes to Pemberley" seemed too good to pass. Reading about gardens is, though, and "The Ivington Diaries" is indeed a good read.

By accident the books of my choice seem to match my flowers. I know I have, in the past, had a somewhat ambivalent relationship with the colours orange, but lately it seems to be creeping up on me most everywhere, even in my garden...

How do you pass a wet summer afternoon, when the rain seems never ending...?

If Im not working,on a rainy day, nothing better than some Patchwork.

In my case rain and Patchwork go perfectly ;-)

Fortunately for me, our rain showers last about 30 minutes and then, the sun comes out. The bouquet is outstanding....I had forgotten how beautiful orange is with purple and blue flowers....

Oh, what I would do for a wet day.... I was just thinking about it, yesterday - how wonderfully fun that would be. We've hardly had a drop of rain since May - just a few pretend showers. It's amazing how our psyches start to crave it - as well as our gardens...

That's very funny about how there's just orange popping up everywhere for you. =]

I had the same experience with 'Death Comes to Pemberley'! I couldn't resist - what a combination - PD James (who I love) and the beloved P&P characters. A bit of fluffy reading but I didn't guess the solution - so, that's fun! ...and, Georgianna...=]

Happy thoughts to you and your cozy afternoons!

I'm glad to find your blog again. I had pinned some of your photos on my pinterest page and thought that you had banned me. Many of us here in the US have been without rain for weeks, and our gardens are dried and brown so it is a pleasure to see your beautiful photos. I haven't seen the Death in Pemberley book but I love P&P.

Hi Mia! here in Italy we haven't had a rainy day since the beginning of summer..but we are forced to stay at home because it's too hot :( So reading, crocheting and making some house works seem to be the best way to fill the time..
I love your flowers!

Well I spent this particular rainy afternoon reading The Little House on The Prairie Cookbook with a mug of soup scattered with cheese and chives - oh and with the heating on!!!!!!

Så fin bukett du har plukket inn. Bøker gir mye inspirasjon, gjerne spesielt på regntunge dager...

Hi Mia, I am glad to find your blog again. I missed you!
Hey, here in Germany we had a 1-day-summer yesterday. It did not rain for 24 hours, great!!! But today.... there was rain for more than 2 days. I will go and do some patchwork tomorrow. In my studio I don't see the weather because it is in the basement.
Regards from Germany

Hello! I've been reading your blog for a while now and have been studying your quilts to try to improve my patchwork and pluck up the courage to start a bigger project.
I have the Pemberley book to read on holiday.
Also know how you feel about the rainy summer, it's been like that here in England.
Glad you decided to start blogging again!

Lovely splashes of colour in your house. It rains a lot where I live so we treat it like any other day. We just carry on doing the things we normally do except of course wearing cool clothes and lounging on the beach. After months of rain we finally have some sun.

I wish it was rainy here this summer. Instead it has been hot and humid. I am looking forward to fall! Love your flowers :)

Mia, we've had a rather dry summer here in NYC, but yesterday afternoon provided a long-lasting thunderstorm, with lots of water and some hail. Very unusual, but perhaps another signal of climate change?

I'm another PD James fan, and have read the Pemberley book. Years ago, on a rainy afternoon, I also had the great pleasure of meeting PD James at a neighborhood bookshop's reading. She was lovely. Alas, the bookshop is no longer in business. I guess that might be another sign of climate change?

It is the opposite here in South Dakota, USA. We are in drought. Corn crops are curling up brown. It is cooler in the garden instead of in the house, so I sit in the garden or on the porch reading blogs. I love your flowers.
Thanks for sharing. Let us know how the books turn out.

We've had a damp cool summer, with only a day here and there when the sun shines and there's any real warmth. Today was such a day, and i enjoyed it to the fullest. On a cold and rainy day I just want to snuggle under a quilt to read and nap.

Here in the Northeast of the U.S. we have had a dry summer - today, we are finally getting a good soaking & everyone is so happy! Maybe my grass will turn green again instead of hard, crinkly brown :) I plan on doing some cross-stitching until it's time to make dinner.

After what seems like months of rain here in England,'they're' promising the start of Summer this weekend...hooray!
I cook when the rain falls, that, and tidying the china in my dresser or sorting my linen cupboard.I love looking at all my lovely embroidered linen.
I'm glad you like PD James...I'm related to her! :0)

How I wish we had had some rain last summer, but all we had were fires and hot hot dry weather. Looking forward to winter ;)
Beautiful flowers and pictures.
