Tidying up

First a confession; this first photo has nothing at all to do with today´s entry. I just wanted to add one pretty picture, as the rest are anything but. So... to the business at hand; tidying up. I am sure none of you faithful readers remember this entry about my interests and passions... or vices (I have very nearly forgotten about it myself).

But since it is mid winter, and I spend more time indoors than I really like to, I can not help but notice the piles of magazines and books that have accumulated on the floor. So today I decided (finally) to try and do something about the matter. After having sorted the various magazines into piles of "keepers" and "non-keepers", I started to flick through the latter pile, in order to see if there is anything worth keeping.

Of course it is more than easy to get distracted while going through old magazines. But I have managed to cut out quite a few interesting articles, and gathered them in old ring binders. It is somewhat tedious work, but the end result is worth it, as it is so much more pleasant to look through a binder full of lovely articles, as opposed to flicking through piles of magazines in search of something potentially inspiring.

But I still have a long way to go before I have dealt with all my magazines. And then there is the pile of books, on the floor of almost every room in the house. Since all the books are "keepers" I guess the only solution is to get more bookshelves (that is if I want the books off the floor). So my tidying up is still very much a work in progress...

i do the same as you..i keep my magazines for a few months and then i go through them for pictures and recipes that inspire..and i have culled most of my books over the years to the point where i now have one small glass fronted cupboard of books (cookbooks and reference books)..if i'm given a novel i read it and then give it away because i've found that i rarely reread novels and if on the odd occasion i want to reread one i can usually borrow the book from the library..

Oh my world I just adore your granny square blanket, that photo is just gorgeous, this is just hoe I see my dream reading corner being.
I took collect magazines and cut out all the bits that inspire me but mine are just kept in a box at the moment but I like your way better.

I do that with all my magazines too - the only problem is that I now need to sort through all my clippings as I have so many scrapbooks I can't find anywhere to keep them all!! Lovely pictures. XX

I agree with the first commenter who says you make the prettiest granny squares. Your colour combinations are always so beautifully coordinated.

Hi Mia,
I had to laugh about your post too, it is so, so me.
Or should I say it was so, so me.
A couple of years ago now I decided to get rid of all my magazines (and believe me I really had loads).
I remember putting them out on the street ready for the rubishman to come and get them.
I must say I stood at the window a couple of times thinking, "should I go get them in again?.
But I didn't, and it was like a sort of freedom feeling, like gone is gone!!!
And do you know what? I don't even buy them anymore and I don't even miss them!!!
Simply because now it's all here online, real people like yourself.
People I know I don't even really know but feel like I know, more so than in magazines then.
Thanks for your wonderful, always inspiring posts.

I think your book stacks make great side tables! I admire your taking the time to cut out the best parts of magazines.. there is so much in most of them that are not worth keeping.. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Mia, I am also wondering about obtaining another bookshelf, and wondering just where I might find space for it.

My apartment has high ceilings, so perhaps what I need to do is trade a sort of tall bookshelf for a really, really tall bookshelf. And then keep some sort of ladder handy.

Your stacks of books and magazines look quite lovely to me.

I just started going through my cupboard full of magazines yesterday. I also put my saved pictures into binders and recycle my magazines by bringing them to the break room at work.

Your quilts and crocheted items are lovely to look at.

I always treat myself to glossy home magazines when I'm working away from home. I enjoy them a couple of times and then I pass them along to someone else.

Dear Mia,
I like circultion - so I get magazines from my sister, read them, take something nice out and pass them to my frined, she passes them to her sister and her mother.Wou, what an amazing journey and eco friendly as well. And yes, there are so many on line inspirations. But books, they are one of a kind. Not an e- reader , myself, regarding the books. They keep coming and will stay - I just love them. Best regards Violeta

Ha, ha, this really hit a cord as I have been doing this for months, but I had magazines going right back to the 80's and, of course, I had to look through every single one of them! But my books, all hundreds of them, are difinitely keepers.

Lovely pictures....I have the same situation with piles of magazines and piles of books! As soon as I sort one out and organise the tear sheets...another one appears! and however many book cases I put up I always end up with books on the floor too. (But I wouldn't be without them!)
Enjoy your sorting, Mia.

Can't remember how I ended up here, but I'll be back - that's for sure.
I love your blog!

Oh, yes, our maggies! Can't get enough of them, can we? I have separate binders for home ideas, crochet, knit, gifts/crafts, recipes and when they get to overflowing, I take time to edit...as my interests change. But, of course, the magazines pile up before getting organized.

Lovely pic at top of the post.

WoW! You do have a wonderful book collection there! A little while ago I did the same as you,as my magazine pile was getting out of control!
I love looking through my 'cuttings' files too.

Hope you have a happy weekend. ;0)

I also 'collect' magazines and have been known to keep them since 1998! yikes! But a few years back I realised I had to get rid of most of them, but guess what, the pile is growing again! So I sympathize with you because I know just how that feels! Sharon

Think, you will get organized soon. Love the beautiful blanket. Just one question: how do you wash the blanket? Can it go to the washing machine?

patchworkandlace sa...

I do exactly the same ,i cut out all the pictures i like and put them into scrap books ,i have about 10 now ,its so much more pleasurable looking through my own scrap books full of all the pictures i love ,i find most magazines now full of adverts and bland uninspiring pictures so i dont buy many anymorex

and, how fortunate you are - not because you have so many books and magazines but because the best kind of people always have this problem! ;) So, you must be the best kind....

This made me laugh1 I have not made much progress on about 18 years of saved magazines out in my garage. The funny thing is, I remember many of those rooms. I have decided that good design is timeless. It doesn't matter when it was done!
