How about orange...?

I know, I know. I have not been kind to the colour orange in the past, even stating that it is one of my least favourite colours. Then what is it that draws me towards that very colour every time I see it, especially in crochet. In fact it has become so bad that it almost feels like a physical craving.

In the end I just had to give in, and give orange a go. So yesterday saw me marching into the yarn shop, and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing out I came with orange, red, deep purple, bright green, hot pink, turquoise and white.

Now some of the colours are "old friends" that I have used several times before, but the first three are new acquaintances. So far we are just getting to know each other, and only a few tentative squares have been crocheted.

But I am surprising myself by how much I am loving them. There is no way of knowing where all this will end (worst case scenario being in the bin!), it might become another cushion cover. Or better still, another crochet blanket.

How about you and orange... love it or hate it?

Hate it. But..... it is part of the grand colour scheme around us and I have even been known to wear it in some forms of late. I know what you mean about the 'physical craving'. Many colours I just hated as a young one are finally revealed to me as also having real beauty now. Cherrie

I love it in small bits. It looks great the way you put them together. I vote for a blanket. I think it would look really nice in your beautiful home.

Hello Mia, I've loved your blog for quite a while. I don't like the colour orange either but found myself crocheting a 'sunny' cushion in just that colour. Though it wasn't for me, I did end up quite liking it. Perhaps because it was tied into nature ie. resembling the sun!

Juanita sa...

oops I meant to give you a link to look at my cushion... http://simplenaturalhandmade.blogspot.com/2012/02/sunny-crochet-cushion-ta-da.html

Darla sa...

Love, love it! My first favorite, orange, second red. Your squares look great, keep up the bright cheery work!

I think of orange a bit like I think of red - I avoid it. I love the pops of red that wind up around the house but there's no orange....unless it's a pile of oranges, that is. I love orange (almost brown, really) in a very earthy tone, though.

I have an interesting relationship with yellow and orange in the garden, too. I don't want them there and say that I don't like them but, come July and August, I love, love, love them in every one else's yard. Therefore, I've thought of a place out in front of the house - hidden by the row of lilacs but visible to everyone - where I can grow cosmos and sunflowers and anything orange and yellow that I like to.

Such cheery colors! =]

I love orange. You are definitely pining for summer, I think!

I love orange. :0) Especially with pinks and greens. Your granny squares look so happy together. :0) I hope you will show us where your dear experiment takes you. :0) May I ask what yarn you are using? So far I have only used two types and would like to try others. :0)
Have a lovely weekend.
Hugs. Trish

Hi Mia,

The colors you are using remind me of the zinnias that were in my garden last summer. They were such a joyous mix of colors and I loved looking at them every day! xoxo Debbie

Mia sa...

Hi Notes of sincerity! Thank you for your kind words. As for the type of yarn I am using, so far I have used two different types (both 100% wool); Falk from Dalegarn and Smart from Sandnes Garn (both of them Norwegian producers). I love them as they come in such a wide range of colours, and they work well together, too, being of the same thickness (I use crochet hook size 3,5)

Once it has been one of my favourite colors.
Now i surely prefere the more delicate ones, like pale blu, cream and greige.
Have a nice day

I like orange, not tons of it in any one thing, but I do enjoy orange in quilts so why not afghans?

I love orange, but in the right amount and with the right colours. Orange and pink are good. Orange and brown make me think of the 70s, which isn't so good ;-)

Orange Oh dear can't say I've ever used it in any project, BUT I'm beginning to feel differently now that I've seen your wee granny squares....might just take the plunge !!!!
Have a sweet & colorful weekend

I love it, particularly next to purple or lavender. It makes me think of dahlias and tulips!

Thank you so much Mia, for answering my question. :o) I will be branching out and trying wool. :o) You have been a great help.
Have a lovely weekend. hugs.

Flott!

Pondside sa...

Tangerine is touted as THE colour for the next decade, but I won't be getting on that bandwagon as I remember the last go-round of orange, Next will be Avocado Green - watch for it!

Anonym sa...

I LOVE orange. It is my happy colour and one that I wear also. Red is too much for me and hot pink too bright for me but orange looks nice when I wear it. I like pink and red also around me. Your crochet is lovely - full of these gorgeous colours!

I love orange. I completely agree with the comment that the colors are like zinnias. I think it is going to be beautiful.

klem Laila

Maybe if you thought of it as "tangerine" instead of orange, it would put a smile on your face.
It is my least favorite color too, but I do like it with the purple and green.....

I adore orange but am not fond of a luminous orange.

I love orange, such a bright and cheerful color I think. I know a bowl of oranges on our table brightens my day. Sometimes our projects need a little "pop" and orange certainly will do that.

I LOVE this combination of colours...I do think that some colours can be either garish or boring on their own but combined together...they can look fabulous!

I can't wait to see it either as cushion or blanket :)

Much love xx

Orange is .... difficult for me to embrace. But it also makes me lift my eye brown at times. It is a weird color. A color I wouldn't wear or paint or really purchasw, but when mixed into crochet granny squares, ripples or patchwork, it is almost a must at times. That spice we seldom have in our cupboard but really need when we make a special exotic dish. Go orange! I am excited to see where this will take you. First the hexagon pillow (with a zing of orange...), a bit out of your normal range, and now this. Things can only get extremely interesting and fab-fantastic I believe. Me like this!

Michele@A Quiet Gracious Life sa...

I hate it! But I think it's quite *lovely* the way you have used it with the other colors. :o)

The colors are wonderful! For those who "believe" in chakras orange is the chakra of the second chakra. It controls the creative energies in us.

The colours are a perfect "pick me up" for a long winter.

I love orange! It is one of my 3 favourite colours... love your squares!

Frances sa...

Mia, I see that the wise Pondside has already left a comment about the fashion industry declaring tangerine as The Color.

In my own personal color affairs, I think that any color that we see in nature (like orange) is a beauty. How to incorporate that hue into other more easily welcomed colorways is the trick.

Accent colors are a bit like using spices/herbs in cooking. One finds which combinations are most pleasing, yet also finds that adding to the mix can be fun.

Your new granny squares are proof that adding an unexpected hue can enliven the entire projects.

I love what you've done with your squares. Orange reminds me of Autumn.. and I like it extra during that time. But orange is an important part of the rainbow so I say.. bring it on! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Joanne sa...

Love it...on other people and in other people's homes. It's not a colour I choose for myself or my home but I appreciate the clever way other people use it. I don't dislike any colour really- in the right setting.

I not so much into organge as well. But I am pretty curious how your needlework will turn out. Maybe I'll be an orangelover afterwards :-) But I just wanted to drop by and tell you how much I love your blog and the coziness your home radiates. XO *Gluexkind*

When we moved in this house, we painted the kitchen walls orange. It was great 1998. After a few years, I began to hate it.

Love your colourful grannies and think a little orange in it is not too bad ;)

Dear Mia,
although I like warm tones, pure orange is not my choice.
But it is high on top of fashion interior colours of this year, orange red, so we will see if we will be more orange charmed....
Best and today luckily sunny regards Violeta

Bluebells and Lavender sa...

Orange as a colour is always very warm and inviting. It reminds me of papaya and oranges. Perhaps in the bleakness of winter, orange offers warmth like the flames of an inviting fire.

suz sa...

Like you, I'm not really fond of orange, unless I'm doing something fall oriented. However, that being said, your project is wonderful and reminds me of spring and summer. This has been a long, odd winter and I'm really looking forward to the colors of spring and summer.
