A Wednesday in February

Just an ordinary Wednesday in February. Albeit a beautiful one. Blue sky, bright winter sun, white snow... and a nippy northerly wind. All looks bright and peaceful, yet there is a bit of "life" to be found.

In the barn "Peder", the ram, has done his job for the season, and the girls are expanding nicely. Only a month or so, and the first wee lambs will be taking their tentative small steps in the barn.

In the henhouse the ladies are taking their first tentative steps outside since the recent snowfalls. But the white world outside does not seem too appealing to them, and they hurry back into the relative warmth of the henhouse again.

In the woods behind our house hubby keeps himself busy, making sure we have enough firewood for next winter.

We seem to go through an amazing amount of wood every winter, but then again the fire is our main source of heating throughout the cold winter months. And we do like to keep warm and cosy!

As for the garden, it lies dormant under a protective layer of snow. There is no sign of life to be seen, not even a slight promise of things to come, but give a couple of months, and it will be an entirely different story.

Yes, a few more months, and I will be busy by the potting bench, filling the pot with soil and summer blooms. Meanwhile, you will find me by the fire, keeping warm and dreaming of the warmer days to come.

Hello Mia,
it seems that time goes by a little slowlier when winter shows his kindly face.
Here in Germany we had two very frosty weeks but now it is raining what makes the streets becoming skating rinks.
I wish I could be in Norway for a while.
Kind regards
Dagmar

Hello Mia, it's still a winter wonderland where you live, but here in the south of England, today it registered 14 degrees on my car thermometer and the sun is still shining! You will enjoy your gardening very soon....Have a lovely evening. Sharon

Hi Mia - you have such a lovely farm - love that beautiful red barn! It's cold there but sure is pretty with the snow.

Life goes on, doesn't it? From season to season, it's good to have a rythm to life and know what's ahead.

Enjoyed your post!

Everything looks so tidy covered in snow. I was wondering, how do the chicken stay warm? Do you have a heater in the chicken house?

Deilig å se at snøen smelter, og ikke minst deilig å se solen igjen!
Nå er det jo faktisk torsdag og øyeblikkelig helg(!) allerede.. Så med denne farten er det snart tid for å plante igjen Mia ;)

It's so nice to peek into another life on the other side of the world. It never snows where I live so it is fascinating to me; I think you are all made of special stuff to put up with that cold in the winter.

Snow in the sun is so beautiful! Can I ask you - when does the sun rise now in your part of the world? And when it becomes dark? Just today I read an article that the light day is rather short in Norway now, just got curious.

HI. Hi just love your farm. No matter the snow and cold you might have I find it a fantastic place. So peaceful and beautiful. I wish I could have a place like that to live on. That's my kind of life. I am full of city life. Congratulations for Peder's work. He is so beautiful.

Hi Mia, Chris here again.
I just wanted to tell you that I wrote a post on my blog today about my ripple blanket, and I linked back to your blog.
You can read the post here. http://gettinghookedagain.blogspot.com/2012/02/story-behind-my-ripple.html#comment-form
Once again thanks for the inspiration!!!

Hi Meggie I am touched that you should be concerned about the welfare of my hens. During the colder months they do have heating in their house. But the hens can actually take quite a bit of cold, apparently down to 15 C below zero (not that I have tested that theory).

Hi Xelena! I am actually not sure when the sun rises here in my neck of the woods at the moment, the other morning I saw a glow of light at around 7 am (I do know that it is full day light when I get up!) They daylight hours have increased a lot since winter solstice, and it is (nearly) light till 6 pm at the moment.

I wish that I had your potting bench! Actually, it's the pots that I'm drooling over.

Usually, we're buried even deeper than you are but it's been so warm, it's mostly the snow piles that are left to melt, now. and it's only February!!!! This morning, my husband called my attention - the meadow birds are back (like a redwing blackbird's song) What an AMAZING sound to hear so early!!! I hope it all goes well, though, and winter doesn't come to get us, after all. Mostly, I thought that I had more time to get organized with gardening plans. but the ground is thawing. This is alright, though - I have a lot of ground to prepare - a lot to get started, this year, at first; so, what a boon to have the extra month. Thanks for listening! =D
