Trees, angels, oranges and stars...

You will be forgiven for thinking that such "an impressive" title is followed by all manner of interesting things. Not quite the case, unfortunately. This is just a random post about my Christmas preparations, while the storm is howling and rain is pelting down (soon all the snow from my recent post will be a distant memory).

Never mind the storm, indoors all is cosy and warm. A little Christmas tree has found its way into the living room, where it will remain, unadorned, through the Holiday. The oranges and the small bowl of cloves have a purpose, too. The plan is to decorate the oranges with the cloves (I do love the smell of those two together), but since daylight is so scarce, I did not get to do it... and to take a photo of the finished result... before the light disappeared.

I can not be called a minimalist, and most likely I will never be one, but recently I have found myself wanting less things and more space around me (no mean feat in a small house). This includes Christmas decorations. In the beginning of December I brought down from the attic my (one!) cardboard box of decorations. Out came the angels and my Advent lights, and the rest went back up. This little angel is one of those that made it.

Back in early November, while I was still just dreaming of my Christmas decorations, I planned to "go rustic". It seems I am more or less sticking to that plan. Another (smaller yet) Christmas tree has been plonked, quite unceremoniously, into yet another white jug on the window sill. It too will remain unadorned.

As for the star (in the title), it refers to the one in my laundry. There it shines, night and day, all through the Holidays. Just as it has done for the past (give or take) six years. And hopefully will continue to do so for Christmases to come.

But the main "star" of my Christmas is still waiting for its chance to shine. No Christmas without a big, "proper" tree (this one will be decorated!). Ours was bought yesterday, and is still waiting in an outhouse, in a bucket of water, to be brought indoors. Hopefully tonight, as tomorrow evening is the date for our annual Christmas dinner with friends. To be continued...

How are you getting along with your Christmas preparations?

Hi Mia,
I love the way a little bit of greenery can make such a beautiful statement. I adore the rustic look for Christmas! Your star is gorgeous and hangs beautifully in your window. I'm sure the light is so cozy at night.

Best wishes from Elsie in Texas!

Like you,I'm starting to think 'less is more' as far as the Xmas decorations go.When I took mine down last year,I sorted through and ended up with one box also. It's easy to get carried away and the house ends up resembling Santa's grotto! I prefer natural rather than tinseltown if you know what I mean!
Looking forward to seeing your beautiful tree in all its
finery. :0)

Mia, as usual, I am admiring how you are gradually bringing Christmas into you home, with grace.

I've been quite busy today on a day off from the shop, baking cookies (buttery brown sugar stars decorated with more red sugar,) wrapping gifts and packaging them up for a visit to the local post office, and beginning to mail the Christmas cards that I have been painting.

Whew! Time rushes past, but in a lovely, seasonal way.

Hello Mia,

Your Christmas preparations are lovely. And the oranges add such a bit of sunny atmosphere to a stormy day.

I'm feeling like less is more this year, too. I've put up fewer decorations and am feeling very good about it.

I sent off my last parcels today, and hope to begin wrapping gifts soon. And finishing the baking.

Love the little bits of holiday showing in your home, can't wait to see the big tree all prettified! I have the house as decorated as it's going to get.. I do invite you to pop over to my blog to see. Today I wrapped a small mountain of toys for our 4 grandsons. The granddaughters have moved 2000 miles away, so their things were sent. I've been to a flurry of holiday parties.. now it's time to relax a bit.

Oh how I adore your 'little trees plopped in a pitcher'---they are so beautiful in their simplicity...I don't have access to Hemlocks or Spruces but I think I will copy you and go hunting for maybe the tops of some small Cedars (heavenly fragrance) and I too must buy some oranges---Your colors with all of the white are delightful! :D Happiest of Holidays and Blessed Be!

You're making me want Christmas to start all over again! So gently lovely.... =]

Being in our new home, and not under a cloud of renovations, I haven't figured out, quite, where to put the decorations, yet. The space and style is different from our old home. I don't know if that makes sense but I found that the things that I did put out were more of a jumble as I tried to find spaces for them. I've been thinking that, actually, I would enjoy just giving half of my decorations to charity. Do you think they'll mind them in January? Maybe, I'll ask, first.
