September

September - the first autumn month. Early September usually feels more like an extension of summer, but now later into the month it is quite obvious that autumn has indeed arrived.

This year more so than before. But then again it is what I say every autumn... that autumn seems to arrive earlier than ever before. Yet this time I really think it is true.

The leaves are changing colour and many trees have shed theirs already. The productive potager has called it a day, and I have started tidying up.

By this stage not many flowers are to be seen in the garden (at least not in mine!) save for the odd rose that somehow has survived the rain and cooler nights.

As for apples, I can not say I am expecting a good crop this year. I think the exceptionally cold May, when the apples trees blossomed, is to be blamed.

I consider myself lucky if there is enough apples for an apple cake or two.

Then again I can not complain about the blackcurrant crop. Which has resulted, not only in delicious jam, but in lovely blackcurrant cordial. The bottles are now stored in the outhouse, waiting to be consumed on cold winter evenings.

My tomatoes, on the other hand, will not stretch far, as out of one plant I got all of 10 tomatoes. Three of which managed to ripen outdoors. The rest I have brought in, hoping they too will in time turn red. If not, "fried green tomatoes" it is...

Hei Mia!

Hi Mia,

You have so much space in your vegetable plot! I enjoyed following your posts through the season. Sorry to hear about your apples. Your tomatoes look good. I didn't have one this year, they all rotted away. Too much rain!

Happy new week!

Indeed, the year and summer seem to pass so quickly right now. Such a shame. Luckily, we could enjoy a cup of coffee outside, this afternoon.
Your apples look great. In here, they are very green. However, there were many more than last year. My colleagues are happy with them as well =)

Du har det fint i din hage uansett årstid synes jeg.
Er spent på ditt nye syprosjekt.
Ha en fin kveld.

Hi Mia,
Autumn is starting to show itself here in Texas too. It is still really hot, but the trees are loosing their leaves, and my tomato plants are about finished producing. I love the look of your raised plant beds. Very nice.

Your tomato harvest looks a lot like mine - pretty much all green. The slow, cool start to summer is to blame, I'm sure.

Så mange flasker med solbærsaft du har fått. Har du en egen "maskin" som lager de fine korkene?

I love watching your garden through the spring and summer. Like you, I am NOT ready for fall, even though I love this time of year. Last winter seemed to last too long and the warm weather was too short.
About your green tomatoes - put them in a brown paper bag with an apple - they should ripen in few days...really!

Mia, as always, it is interesting to see your garden and to compare how the seasons change a bit differently there from what I observe around New York.

We are being teased with some quite chilly days and nights, then reassured by warm and sunny days. We also had so much rain that the park's lawns are still very lushly green, and the tree leaves have yet to really get going with their color changing.

When I visited a farmers' green market last weekend, I noticed that their end of summer tomatoes did not look too good, but thought the apples very tempting...and bought some!

Best wishes.

Hi Suz! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and suggestion as how to ripen my very green tomatoes! Sound like a really nifty idea and I will definitely give it a go. Thank you!
